[Inscription]
In Huanggang, there are many bamboo groves, and the large ones are as thick as beams. Craftsmen split the bamboo and hollow out the joints, using it to replace pottery tiles. Every house uses them because they are cheap and easy to work with. I built a small two-room building in the northwest corner of the city near the ruined ramparts, where wild grass grows in the desolation. It connects with the Yuebo Pavilion. From a distance, it swallows the light of the mountains and draws in the water of the river at its feet. It is a remote, tranquil place, indescribably beautiful. In summer, it is best with heavy rain; in winter, with dense snow. In the former, there is the sound of waterfalls; in the latter, the sound of shattered jade. It is perfect for playing the zither, where the tones are harmonious and smooth; or for composing poetry, where the rhythm is pure and exceptional. All of this is aided by the bamboo tower. In my free time after official duties, I don a crane-feather robe and wear a Huayang cap, holding a volume of the I Ching in hand, quietly sitting and burning incense, dispelling worldly worries. Beyond the landscape, I see only sails on the wind, birds in the sand, misty clouds, bamboo, and trees. And when the strength of the wine fades, the tea smoke disperses, bidding farewell to the setting sun and welcoming the white moon, it is indeed the joy of a hermit’s life. Written during the great heat of the year of Gengwu at Xingdai Cottage, recording a passage about the bamboo tower in Huanggang, with notes added by Chunbo, Chou Chen.
