In the spring of the fourth year of Qingli, Teng Zijing was demoted to Ba Prefecture. The following year, peace and order were restored, and all things prospered. He rebuilt Yueyang Tower, expanding its old structure and inscribing the poems and prose of both Tang and contemporary writers. I observed that Ba Prefecture's grand vista is centered on the great Lake Dongting, which holds distant mountains and swallows the Yangtze River, vast and unbounded. Morning sunshine and evening shadows create countless moods. Such is the magnificent spectacle of Yueyang Tower, and it has been well described by predecessors. Northward it connects to Wuxia Gorge, and southward it reaches Xiaoxiang. Many exiled officials and poets have gathered here, each reflecting on the scene with varying emotions. If the rain falls continuously for months, the cold wind howls, the muddy waves strike the sky, and the sun and stars vanish. Mountains hide, merchants cannot travel, and masts break while oars are crushed. At twilight, all is desolate, with tigers roaring and apes wailing. Climbing the tower then, one feels homesick and worried, fearful of slander and criticism, overwhelmed by melancholy. However, when spring brings calm weather, the water is serene, and the sky stretches out in all directions, a single vast expanse of blue. Seagulls soar, and fish swim gracefully, while the riverbank is filled with fragrant orchids. Or, when the long smoke clears and the bright moon shines over a thousand miles, light dances like gold, and shadows sink like jade. The fishermen’s songs answer each other, and the joy seems endless. Climbing the tower under such conditions, one’s heart becomes open, free from concern for fortune or disgrace, drinking wine in the wind, filled with immense joy. Alas! I have long sought the hearts of ancient sages, and they differ from these two emotions. Why? They did not delight in material things, nor were they saddened by themselves. When they held high office, they worried for the people; when they were far from the court, they worried for their ruler. Whether advancing or retreating, they were always concerned. So, when could they find happiness? Surely they would say, 'Worry before all others in the world, and find joy after all others have found theirs.' Alas! Without such people, with whom could I associate?
