A lone wild goose comes from the sea, not daring to look at the pond. Glancing aside, I see two emerald birds, nesting in the tree of three pearls. High atop the rare tree, they cannot help but fear the golden pellets. Wearing beautiful robes invites envy; those of high virtue incite the gods’ wrath. Now I wander in the darkness; what hunter could ever tempt me? Orchid leaves thrive in spring, and cassia blossoms shine in autumn. This vitality rejoices in the season and makes the time a celebration. Who would have known that the hermit, living in the forest, would hear the wind and find contentment? Even grass and trees have their true nature; why seek the admiration of the beautiful? The recluse returns to his solitary rest, washing away lingering worries. With these sentiments, I give thanks to the noble birds, transmitting my distant thoughts. Evening and morning, I hold an empty heart; who could understand my deep feelings? The principle of flight and sinking is always apart; how can it soothe my sincerity? In Jiangnan, there are red oranges, still green in the woods through winter. Is it due to the warmth of the land? No, it’s their nature to withstand the cold years. How can I offer them to a worthy guest, separated as I am by deep barriers? Fate moves according to its encounter, circulating endlessly and hard to trace. Though we talk of peach and plum trees, can this tree offer no shade?
