The gentleman's background is unknown, and his name is also unclear. There were five willow trees by his residence, so he adopted the name after them. He was quiet and seldom spoke, uninterested in fame and fortune. He loved reading but never sought deep understanding; whenever he grasped something, he would forget to eat in joy. He had a fondness for wine, but his poverty meant he could not always afford it. His friends, knowing his nature, would sometimes invite him to drink; whenever he drank, he would finish the wine, determined to get drunk. Once drunk, he would leave, unconcerned about whether he was welcome to stay or not. His simple dwelling had only bare walls, unable to block the wind or sun; his coarse clothes were patched, and his bowl and gourd were often empty, yet he remained content. He wrote essays for his own enjoyment, satisfying himself. He cared not for gain or loss, living this way until the end. The eulogy says: Qian Lou once said, I am not troubled by poverty or low status, nor do I strive for wealth and power. His words seem to describe this man! He raised his cup and composed poems, happy with his aspirations. Could he be a man of the Wuhuai clan? Or of the Gaitian clan?
